The General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) was formed in 1965 when Singapore became an independent republic. In the early years, the GIA was essentially an extension of the Malaysian Insurance Association from which it grew. In fact, the GIA did not officially start operations until Jan 1967, and didn't stage its first Annual General Meeting until 28 Mar 1968.

The first President of the Association was Mr Tan Hoay Gie and Management Committee meetings were alternately held in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Gradually, the fledgling association began to assert its independence, and in 1972 the first Management Committee meeting was held on Singapore soil.

The GIA was officially registered as General Insurance Association of Singapore on 24 Aug 1972 and its sibling, the Malaysian Insurance Association (MIA) later re-organised itself into the Persatuan Insuran Am Malaysia (PIAM). The two associations still enjoy close contact today.

Rapid industry growth in the mid-1970s led to the GIA engaging its own staff and renting permanent premises. The Association moved to Wing-On Life Insurance Building in 1976 where it was to remain for the next decade.

Today, GIA located at 112 Robinson Road, #05-03 HB Robinson, Singapore 068902 is one of Singapore’s most vibrant trade associations in the financial services sector. It has come a long way from its humble beginning back in 1966. GIA now represents every kind of general insurance company -both foreign and home-grown, large and small, specialist and composite insurers.
