My role is assessing motor claims and ensuring claim settlements are paid promptly and fairly by liaising with insurers, lawyers and workshops. Within motor, there are different types of claims (mainly own damage/ third party property/injury etc). Good customer service is essential when we encounter challenging i.e. fraudulent/inflated cases. I get to handle complex claims cases and this enhances my negotiation/customer service skills. As a claims officer, I have been given many opportunities to learn other corporate skills. In addition, the work itself has given me much internal satisfaction. |

My present role includes assessing and managing Property, Public Liability and the occasional Workmen Compensation claims. Given the portfolio of risks and variety of businesses underwritten, I am exposed to a wide range of businesses. It is exciting as I attempt to understand the risks and exposures that are attached t the insureds' businesses. It is
important as well to understand these risks in order to effectively manage and mitigate present claims and future
exposures. Businesses constantly changes, so the learning curve is constantly renewed. |

I began my career in the General Insurance industry in 1995 as a Financial and Professional risk broker before changing my role in 2001 to a Specialty Insurance underwriter. I have been given opportunities to learn and understand risk issues for a variety of businesses such as commercial and financial institutions, stockbrokers, venture capitalist and banks. In addition, I have received a wide variety of training – regionally and locally. One of the key challenges as a specialty liability underwriter is to continuously keep pace with changes in economic, legal and political developments within the
region and globally because this directly impacts the way we assess our customers' risk profile. |

I first started my general insurance career in June 1999. My current role as a Business Development Executive in the Broking Unit enable me to work closely with brokers on New Business Quotations handling, Marketing & Rapport Building Activities e.g. monthly visits; training sessions & organizing business functions for target brokers. The interesting aspect of this job is to handle a wide range of quotations/ risks presentation which present a very good learning opportunity for presentation skills. The ability to meet and manage the broker's timeline, brainstorm solutions to manage both the ideal
expectation of underwriters and brokers is very challenging to me. |

I started off as a direct broker; acting as an intermediary between my clients & the insurers. Negotiating and bargaining with insurers became a daily regular task. Being an intermediary helped me substantially as I have learnt to understand, appreciate & sympathize with problems faced by agents and brokers as a team to brainstorm solutions best suited to the insured's needs. The challenge is to allow intermediaries to understand the underwriting perspective. The interesting part
is the benefit of knowing and understanding all classes of business. |

I joined the General Insurance industry in early 2005, seeking a career that enables me to use my problem-solving and creativity skills. Underwriting seems to be a right fit as it requires risk assessing and enable me to view from different angles at risk and also to manage and grow a portfolio of risks. I am a Senior Underwriter with Financial Lines in-charge of the Professional Indemnity portfolio. Besides assessing risks, I do marketing, product development, conduct training to intermediaries and assist other regions in the risks they see. The broad spectrum of work allows me to go out to the
market to visit and keep in touch with the intermediaries. |
